Motivating Change
In 2004, I knew I needed to help individuals accept themselves as they are and that the medical field needed my compassionate care. I pursued my two majors, Psychology and Women’s Studies, at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Here, I was introduced to Pediatric Psychology which is the field of helping children, adolescent, and families navigate the medical world. I worked at Hasbro Children’s Hospital connected with Brown University for two years during undergrad. My mentors encouraged me to pursue my doctorate and so I began my journey in Louisville.
I came to Spalding University and worked in several major hospitals in town including the Louisville VA, Peace Hospital, Norton Children’s, and Wellstone in IN. I matched for my internship year at Johns Hopkins Medical School and Kennedy Krieger Rehabilitation Institute where I did full time consult liaison work aiding children and families to adjust to life in the hospital with new and chronic diagnoses. I worked with those surviving medical traumas, organ transplants, or motivating through difficult rehabilitation and medication adherence to improve overall life and health. I work with children 2 and up a myriad of medical conditions including Gastrointestinal Disorders, chronic pain and fatiguing conditions( e.g. POTS or Migraines), medical desensitization, Diabetes management, and degenerative conditions.
For my Postdoctoral Fellowship, I trained at a residential level of care called Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt in Towson, MD. Here I learned the intricacies of etiological pathways of eating disorder pathology, how to treat co-occurring diagnoses, and witness incredible strength and resilience from people.
I returned back to Louisville in 2015 and began working in private practice for a few years. Then I joined the Louisville Center for Eating Disorders and BeWell Kentucky in 2018. I served as an executive board member and clinical manager for 6 years.
Through the last 8 years, I have taught as adjunct faculty at Spalding University and University of Louisville for graduate course in Pediatric Psychology and Eating Disorder Treatment. I have served on the Kentucky Psychological Association executive board.
Another honor I had for 4 years, was serving on the first Governor Appointed Kentucky Eating Disorder Council. With this council, I helped advocate for insurance reimbursement rates to be sustainable for programs, demanded increase in coverage for KY Medicaid and Medicare, provided hours of eating disorder pathology education such as screening and assessment, intervention, and levels of care of eating disorders. I was able to reach hundreds of medical providers, educators and children advocates across the state with these continuing education lectures.
Now, I am committed to provide high quality, evidence based treatment to all age individuals with eating disorders. I continue to treat chronic health conditions, aid patients in navigating new diagnoses and supporting family members who have loved ones suffering from medical conditions or eating disorders.
Therapy Insights
I utilize evidence based treatments for eating disorders, mood and anxiety related disorders. The modalities I use most often are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Based Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Exposure Response Prevention, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I am eclectic in use of these interventions meaning I use what I think will best treat the presenting problems at the time of the session.
Typically weekly sessions are prescribed but sometimes due to need or severity twice a week is helpful for more support. I provide 50 min of therapy and use the last 10 min of the hour to coordinate care with other providers or support people if need be as well as documentation for the therapy appointment.
All services are self-pay but I am able to provide you with a superbill for your sessions which you can submit to your insurance for out of network benefits.
